Art Project: Fermata
〈Fermata: Pause〉는 SBS D Forum 2020의 주제와 연결되어 기획된 아트 프로젝트로, 기술과 사회가 급격히 가속되는 시대 속에서 ‘멈춤’이라는 상태의 의미를 다시 사유하는 작업이다. 음악 용어인 페르마타가 지시하듯, 이 프로젝트는 흐름을 잠시 정지시키는 지점을 통해 감각과 사고의 전환 가능성을 제시한다.
오프닝 퍼포먼스에서는 〈고유시〉를 활용한 미디어 아트가 선보여졌다. 서로 다른 속도로 작동하는 시간의 구조를 시각화한 이 작업은, 기술 발전이 모든 것을 동일한 리듬으로 밀어붙이는 시대에 각 개인이 경험하는 시간의 불균등함과 상대성을 드러낸다. 이는 포럼이 다루고자 했던 기술, 인간, 사회의 관계를 감각적으로 환기시키는 장치로 기능했다.
동시에 〈Fermata: Pause〉는 단일 퍼포먼스를 넘어, 방송용 미디어 아트 영상으로 제작되어 포럼 프로그램의 일부로 송출되었다. 이어진 강연과 토크 세션에서는 해당 작업을 매개로 기술 환경 속에서 인간의 판단, 선택, 그리고 ‘잠시 멈춘다는 행위’가 갖는 의미에 대한 논의가 확장되었다.
이 프로젝트는 기술의 효율과 속도를 전제하는 담론에서 한 걸음 물러나, 멈춤과 지연, 간격이 어떻게 새로운 인식과 사유의 공간을 만들어낼 수 있는지를 탐색한 시도로 자리한다.
Fermata: Pause was conceived as an art project in direct relation to the theme of SBS D Forum 2020, reflecting on the meaning of “pause” in an era defined by acceleration and technological expansion. Borrowing its title from a musical term that signifies a held moment, the project introduces suspension as a space for perceptual and conceptual shift.
For the opening performance, a media artwork based on Proper Time was presented. By visualizing multiple temporal speeds operating simultaneously, the work foregrounds the unequal and relative experience of time within contemporary technological systems. It functioned as a sensory framework through which the forum’s broader questions—concerning technology, society, and human experience—could be approached.
Beyond the live performance, Fermata: Pause was produced as a media art film and broadcast as part of the forum’s official program. Lectures and talk sessions followed, using the project as a point of reference to further examine human judgment, decision-making, and the significance of pausing within technologically driven environments.
Rather than emphasizing speed or efficiency, the project positions pause, delay, and interruption as conditions that open up new possibilities for reflection and awareness within contemporary systems.
