인공지능은 정보 전달 기술과 데이터의 축적을 통해 탄생한 기술이다. 작가는 인류의 정보 전달 기술의 기원을 종이와 잉크의 발명에서 찾고, 인쇄술을 통해 지식이 비약적으로 확산되며 과학기술 문명이 이룩되었고, 인터넷을 거쳐 축적된 데이터가 인공지능으로 이어졌다는 흐름에 주목한다.
작가는 종이와 먹, 활을 만드는 무형문화재 장인을 찾아가 직접 기술을 전수받아 각 재료를 제작했다. (안치용 한지장, 한상묵 묵장, 김윤경 궁장)
이렇게 제작한 재료를 사용해 디지털 무선 정보 전송을 연상시키는 행위로 이미지를 만들어낸다. 한지 과녁에 화살 끝에 솜뭉치를 달아 먹을 찍어 하나의 점을 전송하는 행위는, 0과 1로 기록되는 디지털 정보 시대의 기술과 인류 최초의 정보 전달 기술이 하나의 점에서 만나 이미지로 전환되는 순간을 보여준다. 이 행위는 서로 다른 시대와 시간을 초월한 기술들이 하나의 화면 안에서 공존하도록 한다.
Artificial intelligence is a technology that has emerged through the accumulation of data and the development of systems for information transmission. Lee Wan traces the origins of humanity’s information technologies to the invention of paper and ink, noting how the printing press enabled the exponential dissemination of knowledge and the formation of scientific and technological civilization, and how the data accumulated through the internet ultimately led to artificial intelligence.
For this work, Lee Wan sought out masters of intangible cultural heritage who specialize in making paper, ink, and bows, and learned their techniques directly while producing each material himself (Ahn Chi-yong, master papermaker; Han Sang-muk, master ink maker; Kim Yoon-kyung, master bow maker).
Using these materials, Lee Wan creates images through performative actions that evoke digital wireless information transmission. The act of attaching cotton to the tip of an arrow, dipping it in ink, and “transmitting” a single dot onto a hanji paper target visualizes a moment in which the technologies of the digital information age—recorded as zeros and ones—and humanity’s earliest methods of information transmission converge at a single point and are transformed into an image. Through this gesture, technologies from different eras and temporalities are made to coexist within a single visual field.
